Let’s face it – it’s every little girls dream to be a ballerina when they are older, isn’t it? It certainly was some of our dreams; the girls here at Herinterest. Those beautiful ballet shoes and those incredibly cute tutu’s… We all dream of being the Prima Ballerina but sadly, not all of us get there.

We decided to have a look back through memory lane to remember the top 20 famous ballerina’s… Almost in a way to remind us of our hopes and dreams when we were little girls too!

Here are the top 10 famous ballerina’s:

1 – Anna Pavlova

Anna Pavlovna Matveyevna Pavlova was born on February 12th, 1881 and she died in 1931 aged just 49 years old. In her short life, a life that was cut short far too soon, she was known to be one of the most famous ballerina’s in the world and not only took part in the Imperial Russian Ballet as one of the principal artists, but also in the Ballet Russes of Sergei Diaghilev.

She is better known, however, for taking her ballet company around the world, she became the first ballet dancer to do such a thing, and even created the role The Dying Swan which has been loved and adored by many for years.

2 – Misty Copeland

Misty Copeland, an American-born ballet dancer, entertainer and author now dances for the American Ballet Theatre, and despite the fact she didn’t actually start dancing until she was 12 years old (quite an old age for most ballet dancers), it didn’t stop her from becoming an award winning dancer that again, is now adored by dancing little girls all around the world.

In fact, back in 1997, Misty won an award in Southern California and to be more precise, the Los Angeles Music Centre Spotlight Award!

3 – Galina Ulanova

Galina Sergeyevna Ulánova, born 8th January 1910, was another Russian ballet dancer that sadly passed away in 1998 at the rip old age of 86.

During her dancing years, she was regularly called one of the best ballet dancers of the twentieth century, and is very well known for her parts in Swan Lake, Giselle, and Romeo and Juliet.

She even won an award for the People’s Artist of the USSR, and fellow dancers described her as an “angel”, even going as far as to say that she danced like one.

4 – Darcey Bussell

This is a name that everyone has heard and is possibly one of the most famous ballerina’s in the world. With a CBA after her name, the England-born dancer became the principal dancer of the Royal Ballet at the very young age of just 20 back in 1989.

These days she’s more behind the scenes than on the stage, although she still loves to dancer, and the 45 year old dancer is now the President of the Royal Academy of Dance, and even a patron for the International Dance Teachers Association!

5 – Paloma Herrera

Buenos Aires-born Paloma Herrera is currently one of the principal ballet dancers for the American Ballet Theatre. Born on 21st December, 1975, she become an official member in 1991, had gone on to be a soloist just two years later, and just two years after that, she became the principal dancer she’d always dreamed of!

6 – Diana Vishneva

Born on 13th July, 1976, Diana Vishneva is another Russian ballet dancer and these days, you’ll see her dancing as the principal ballerina with the Mariinksy Ballet (it was previously known as the Kirov Ballet), and also for the American Ballet Theatre, just like Paloma Herrera.

After graduating into the Mariinsky Ballet back in 1995, she won two prizes which helped shoot her to fame – the Golden Sofit and the Benois de la Danse, and it was just a year after that that she found herself a principal dancer.

7 – Miyako Yoshida

Moving away from the Russian dancers now and we come to a Japanese ballerina – Miyako Yoshida. Born on 28th October, 1965 she actually joined the Royal Ballet School in the UK back in 1983 and she’s progressed further with her career since then. Now known as an award winning ballet dancer, that’s not all she does. In 2001, she was actually appointed as an Artist for Peach for UNESCO.

8 – Uliana Lopatkina

Ulyana Vyacheslavovna Lopatkina (what a name and a half!) was born in Ukrainian SSR on 23rd October, 1973 and she is now a Prima ballerina for the same ballet company as Diana Vishneva – The Mariinksky Theatre in St. Petersburg. It took her just four years to get to principal ballerina stage, and won the People’s Artist of Russia back in 2006!

9 – Sylvie Guillem

We’re in France now to French-born ballerina Sylvie Guillem. Born on 25th February, 1965 she was actually classed as the top-ranking dancer (female) for the Paris Opera Ballet, and it wasn’t long before she went on to become a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet in the UK (London).

You were probably remember her more (if you’re a fan of the ballet) in Don Quixote and Swan Lake, and also in Giselle too!

10 – Julie Kent

American ballerina Julie Kent is currently one of the great principal ballet dancers with the American Ballet Theatre and was another dancer that shot to fame fairly quickly, moving from an apprentice in 1985, to a member of the corps de ballet for the ABT in 1986, getting solo status just four years later in 1990, and three years after that becoming a principal dancer.

Ballerina’s are both beautiful and graceful and the lovely ladies we have featured on this list are no exception. One thing is for sure, it certainly makes most of us at Herinterest wish we had carried on on our ballet dancing days…. What about you?
