Celebrities range from actors to famed artists and are known throughout the world. While most celebrities are quite wealthy, there are many famous people who are just well off. 1. Audrey Hepburn

Although Audrey Hepburn was born into a wealthy family, World War II took away her family’s security and wealth. Part of the reason that Hepburn was always so thin was due to the limited quantities of food and sustenance that she went through during World War II. Despite—and perhaps because of—this lack of nutrition, she had a lifelong love of chocolate.
Professionally, Audrey Hepburn first started her career on Broadway. Before long, she was starring in Hollywood films and became one of the world’s top fashion icons. By 1953, she had won her first Academy Award for Best Actress. Although she was famed for her roles in movies like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Sabrina, she also received notoriety in later life for her contribution to humanitarian causes like UNICEF. In addition to being a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, she also was the creator of the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund.
2. Michael Jackson

When Michael Jackson was only six years old, he became world famous as a part of the Jackson Five. Formed from his various brothers and sisters, the group traveled the country and played music. Unfortunately for Michael Jackson, years of abuse from his father and the stress of living on the road at such a young age played a role in what he would become. Although he had a thriving solo career from the 1970s onward, he remained broken from his childhood life and was even accused of becoming a child abuser later in life. Despite the controversy that continuously surrounded his life, he managed to sell 20 million copies of his first album, produced hits like “Thriller” and commanded one of the highest royalties payouts in the industry. Jackson met his death in 2009 through a mixture of prescription drugs.

Oprah Winfrey is perhaps most famous for her talk show, Oprah. In addition to this popular talk show, she has created a magazine, a bok club and a number of other ventures. Although she is one of the richest women in the world know, she grew up in a life of severe poverty with just one parent. She managed to get good grades, and was employed as a television news anchor following her college graduation. Since her personality was not ideal for being a news anchor, she ended up taking over a talk show that was later renamed the Oprah Winfrey Show.
4. Ian McKellen

As a child in the United Kingdom, Ian McKellen was exposed to the terror of war at an early age. World War II occurred during his formative years and shaped his world view. Despite the stress of his youth, he developed a passion for acting. After enrolling at Cambridge University, he joined the Marlowe society and began to act regularly. His first official acting role started in 1961, and he appeared on film for the first time in 1969. In modern times, Ian McKellen is most known for his acting roles of Magneto in the X-Men and Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings series. Due to his acting prowess and activism for LGBT rights, he was knighted by the Queen of England and designated as Commander of the order of the British Empire.
5. Ellen DeGeneres

Growing up, Ellen DeGeneres was the daughter of an insurance agent and a speech therapist. After attending high school in Metairie, Louisiana, she enrolled at the University of New Orleans to pursue a communication degree. She dropped out to work in a law firm and began performing stand-up comedy in local clubs. Before long, she started to tour as a comedian. After this success, she became the host of the Ellen Show.

As a child, Tom Cruise’s mom was a school teacher and an amateur actress, while his father was working as an engineer. Until his parents divorce when Cruise was 11, the family moved around frequently. During this time, he contemplated becoming a priest as an adult. He ended getting extremely involved in drama club, and this led him to pursue a career as an actor. From films like Taps to Top Gun, he has starred in a number of high profile movies. Outside of acting, Cruise has had numerous marriages and has also been an outspoken advocate for the church of Scientology.

Life: 1926 to 1962
Born an named Norma Jeane Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe was famoous for being one of the top sex icons in all of Hollywood history. During World War II, she worked at a munitions factory to support the war effort. While there, she met her husband, Jimmy Dougherty, and also met a photographer called David Conover. He ended up using her photographs for a story about women in the workplace, and these photos ended up starting her career. By 1946, she had divorced her husband and changed her name officially to Marilyn Monroe. Through acting classes, she started a contract with Twentieth Century Fox and quickly became one of the most famous actresses in history.
8. Angelina Jolie

In modern acting history, Angelie Jolie is one of the most famous stars. She started acting as a young girl and became famous for roles in things like Gia and Girl, Interrupted. In addition, she has also worked as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency.
9. Walt Disney

Life: 1901 to 1966
Although his face may not be as famous as many celebrities, Walt Disney certainly counts as a famous person. He was the person responsible for starting the Walt Disney Company and creating cartoons like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck. Although he passed away decades ago, his legacy lives on through the modern Walt Disney Company.
10. Maggie Smith

Growing up in Oxford, Maggie Smith’s birth name was Margaret Natalie Smith. She went to the Oxford Playhouse School before beginning to act on stage in 1952. After a stint on Broadway, she began to perform in films. Recently, Maggie Smith has become famed for her work in Harry Potter and Downtown Abbey. Due to her acting roles, she was named a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
