To achieve defined curls like the ones pictured above, use medium barrel curling iron to get “spring curls”, working in one-inch square sections-start at one end of iron and wrap to the other end. Release hair strand from curling iron carefully, so as not to pull the fresh curl out. Repeat until curls cover entire head, wrap curls in the direction you want style to go i.e. first two sections closest to face directed toward face to frame it, bang directed down and toward face. Apply maximum hold hair spray and allow to dry completely. Once hair spray has dried begin running a pick carefully through each individual curl making sure each curl returns to its original shape-fluff and place each curl where you think it looks best and spray with hair spray to finish. Another pretty look for this style-is to carefully comb out each individual curl and lightly backcomb-taking care when backcombing, to do so in direction hair strand is to lie. Use small metal or plastic pick to lift hair ends into place around face etc. This produces a romantic, fluffy profusion of curls.
To achieve loose curls and waves with bang, as pictured above-use large barrel curling iron, applying all over curl as above. However, for this style- pick hair out with a wide-tooth pick and/or pull curl out with a comb. “Bump up” bangs with large barrel iron as well and comb out-leaving bang straight. Spray all.
To achieve a more sleek curl, such as in the last picture above, after making side part-using a medium or large barrel curling iron make curls in the direction you want your style to go. Roll curls down in sections on either side of part, sides are rolled toward back of head, back can either be rolled down or in toward center of head. Direct bang under, toward face, as well as the next inch section below it. Spray all of curls with medium to extra hold hairspray. Allow to dry completely and brush hair out-being careful not to pull curl completely out of hair. Fluff and backcomb (tease) in direction, you want hair to lie if necessary.

All these styles with the exception of Dolly Parton’s (center) are achieved with a large barrel curling iron. Bump-Up from crown to about midway down hair strand to give lift and volume to style-then add more curl to ends, some more than others, depending on the look you are trying to get (as seen in pictures) the tighter the curl, the fuller the appearance of the hairstyle. Always wrap curl in the direction you want to hair to go. When it is time to brush out curl, always remember not to pull to the point of removing curl. Backcombing may need to be applied as in Reba McEntyre’s style-to provide a bit of lift at root and volume in overall style.
To get Dolly’s look-use a medium barrel curling iron and direct crown diagonally to right from side part, direct down from other side of part. Direct hair strands around face in toward face, along with bang. Direct sides of hair to back, and then direct the back of hair to the center of head. When all curls are in place, spray with medium to extra hold hairspray. Once hairspray is dry, backcomb each individual curl carefully and fluff with fingers-pulling sections into place and spraying with finishing spray. Pull part out of crown by tousling hair with fingers and holding each strand up off of scalp and spraying- hold in place till dry.
