Layered Bob or Lob

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume

@hairbycassandrazoe

Q&A with style creator, Cassandra Olson
Hairstylist @ Vogue Salon in Laguna Beach, CA

How would you describe this look?

This look was created from an inspirational photo my client brought in of Chrissy Teigen. I started with throwing in a full head of dropped highlights in foil. I used a sort of a balayage technique then used two different toners from roots to ends.

The haircut was a bit more customized for my client. Her hair is fine, and so I wanted to create something lived in but still structured. I created her shape point cutting the perimeter/layers and texturizing the finished look. I love how creating dimension with color and layering up a bob can make fine hair come to life.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I believe many people could consider a look like this – fairly low maintenance color and haircut. I would definitely customize the tone of highlights to the client. This haircut I believe shows best when done on fine/medium types, and a client who will either take the time to create texture using products like texture sprays or sea salt sprays.

Layered Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Vallorie Byars
Hair Color Specialist @ Studio Vallorie in Nashville, TN

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is a fun sexy asymmetrical lived-in pixie. I love doing haircuts like this because it is effortless for the guest, so they should be able to do as little or as much as they want with their style and still look fabulous. We also took her to a bright icy blonde to plump up the hair and give some serious attitude to the cut and show off the detail.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I think this cut and color is great for someone who is low maintenance day to day but is ok getting it touched up in 6 weeks at a minimum. This haircut has no age or demographic you can rock this as a 13-year-old or a 70-year-old and as long as you are feeling yourself everyone else will see that shine through.

All you need is an incredible color safe shampoo like Evo’s Ritual Salvation followed by Fabuloso Platinum Conditioner to keep out the excess warm tones. Towel dry and spray Evo’s dry spray wax Shebang-a-bang, let it air dry and blow dry, and add a little more Shebang-a-bang to bring out as much texture as you want. Take a chance to have fun and embrace you’re sexy!

Side-Swept Bob

@amanda.galmiche

Q&A with style creator, Amanda Galmiche

How would you describe this look?

This look is effortless and understated. It’s modern and easy to style for an undone day-to-day casual look, but can be worn ultra smooth for a chic nighttime event. The color is simply meant to enhance the client’s natural cool brunette undertones.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I would recommend sticking close to your natural hair color. Because this is a single shade, not a dimensional highlighted look – the regrowth line would be harsh if it wasn’t a close match to the natural.

Textured Lob

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume

@hairby.tia

Q&A with style creator, Tia Ault
Hairstylist / Salon Owner @ Rogue Salon & Spa in Snowflake, AZ

How would you describe this look?

This textured lob is one of my favorites on my clients with fine hair, as well as those who are growing out short hair. It gives that awkward grow out length some style. The seamless layers create that extra boost of volume that everyone loves. A Rooted Blonde is a great option for those who love being a brighter blonde but don’t want that harsh grow out. It’s perfect for those that want a low maintenance blonde color.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look can be worn by all hair types, including straight or curly hair. I find that it looks best with some type of wave or curl in it. I recommend using a 1-inch curling iron or wand on fine hair that has problems holding a curl and 1.25-inches for all other hair types. I finish the look with a dry texture spray. I typically use Unite Texturiza. This medium hold spray adds texture, volume, & fullness. Hold the can 8-10-inches away & spray on dry hair.

Long Bob Curls

@faithinshears

Q&A with style creator, Courtney Major
Student @ AVEDA Institute Nashville in Nashville, TN

How would you describe this look?

I would describe this look as having a strong shape with low maintenance curls. I love that it’s such a great combination of having a structured perimeter with the triangle one-length cut, but still has a tousled style with soft curls to create balance.

This cut and style is versatile for wide range of face shapes. The cut is perfect for someone who wants to make a bold statement with their hair yet keep it simple because of their extremely busy lifestyle.

Any advice for someone considering it?

For this look, I recommend Aveda Invati Advanced Shampoo, Conditioner, and Scalp Revitalizer to add thickness and prevent breakage, which affects how full your hair looks. Prep towel-dried hair with Aveda Thickening Tonic and Phomolient.

Flat wrap the hair to remove most of the moisture. Then section the hair and round brush the hair while rolling the brush up and down the hair shaft to form the foundation of the curl. When releasing the hair, twist the brush to create the curl. Use a 1-inch Marcel iron to enhance curl if needed. Finish the style with Aveda Air Control for flexible hold and humidity resistance.

Playful Pixie Cut

@russkifloyds99

Q&A with style creator, Victoria Mirzoeva
Stylist / Colorist / Regional Educator @ Floyd’s 99 in La Grange, IL

How would you describe this look?

One of my favorite hairstyles is the textured pixie cut. I love everything about this style. With this style you can mix short, clean sides and have a fun texture that is longer on top.

There are many options for styling that allow you to change up your look. You can wear it straight, with waves, or spike it up. You can play with this style and have a different look every day.

Any advice for someone considering it?

I recommend this cut for a woman who loves to be fashionable, funky, and unique. This style is perfect for people who don’t like to do much with their hair, but still want to look awesome. This hairstyle will fit pretty much any face shape and any hair texture.

For styling, I recommend Floyd’s 99 Styling Cream. It gives amazing texture to the hair that looks natural and holds as long as you like.

Very Natural and Lived-in

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume

@laurenpaynehair

Q&A with style creator, Lauren Payne
Balayage Color Specialist / Stylist @ Work of Art Hair Studio in Los Feliz, LA

How would you describe this look?

My client has a lot of fine hair. When she came to me here, she had over processed hair, and it was more blonde than she wanted. I added an ashy neutral level 6 light brown base color, using Goldwell at the root. I melted the root into the lowlights, then glossed it with a neutral beige Redken shades eq.

She wanted to keep her length, so I only cut off an inch on the ends but added a lot of textured layers to shag it up a bit. The front angles were evened out and blended from a previous bad haircut.

I used Pureology Color Silk Bodifier from roots to ends to give a voluminous blowout. I also used Hydrate Air Dry Cream from mids to ends to protect the hair from heat and give a smooth frizz-free finish. I finished with the Dyson blow dryer and a medium-sized brush for flipped out hair and volume. My favorite thing about this look is how it brings out her natural beauty.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This look is achievable and a very natural, lived-in look. I’m loving the whole lived-in trend right now. We stayed very close to her natural hair color. We just enhanced it by taking out any dullness and adding more vibrant tones. We also stayed very close to her straight texture with a smoother style.

Her look is staying true to the hair she was born with, and I think that’s good advice for any client considering this look. Stay in the realm of your unique beauty and have your stylist enhance your natural tones and textures.

Playful Texture

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @melanie.s.stylist

Q&A with style creator, Melanie Stipdonk
Master Hairstylist @ Pomme Salon in Kelowna, BC

How would you describe this look?

This look is really great for naturally curly hair to let loose and express itself. There is a lot of texture to help get really fun and playful movement. Not a lot of styling is required and the best styling will probably be done on your pillow!

Any advice for someone considering it?

One thing to consider when getting shorter haircuts is how the cut will compliment your face shape. Pay close attention to areas you’d like to show off such as your eyes, cheekbones, and jawline. The best face shape for this particular cut is square, heart-shaped, round, and oval.

Styling is simple. Start with wet or damp hair and add some texture spray, an oil and/or pomade, then a give it all a quick little tousle, focusing on the cute bits around your face to accentuate your best features. This is the ideal cut for everyday low maintenance but high impact styling. If you add height to your hair, it will make you feel taller and longer, while styling it down with bangs will control the length of your face and forehead if that is a concern.

This haircut is great for hair that is thicker near the roots but seems to thin out toward the ends. Cutting off those scraggly ends will elevate your esthetic and grab you a whole lot of compliments.

Face-Framing Shag

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @cecicoonhair

A modern shag is a great way to fake volume as all the texturing adds life even to the most lifeless hair.

Q&A with style creator, Ceci Coon
Stylist @ Marquee Salon in Oakland, CA

How would you describe this look?

This haircut is a take on the modern shag. It focuses on face-framing layers, creating softness around the face and volume at the crown

It is a cut that works at any length or density by simply adjusting the number of layers someone would have based on the overall shape/style they are going for.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a great cut for someone that is trying to plump up their hair and add movement. Styling is easy because it can either be air dried with a salt spray and/or smoothing cream, or it can blow dried with a thickening spray or mousse to create a little more lift on the crown.

I have found that a modern shag works for all face shapes and hair types because you can choose where to emphasize volume or width and where to enhance or create wave. I think this is a great cut for someone who doesn’t like to spend a lot of time on their hair, as well as someone who appreciates looking good but is low maintenance.

Textured Pixie Cut

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @mainstreethaircompany

Q&A with style creator, Ellen Poulos
Stylist @ Main Street Hair Company in Lisle, IL

How would you describe this look?

This pixie haircut is a textured look. The cut shows off all the layering while leaving the edges soft. It’s a classic look that won’t ever go out of style.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To style, definitely use a texture paste on the hair when it is wet, followed up by a pomade on dry hair to define the cut.

Versatile Blunt Bob

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @headkase_dxb

Q&A with style creator, Ali Keogh
Owner @ Headkase Salon in Dubai, UAE

How would you describe this look?

I would call this style a blunt bob. I have put some texture through it, but without any layering, which in turn is why I love this look so much.

It’s the versatility that makes it easy for the client to handle. Without the layers, it is quick and easy to style with a quick and simple blow dry for women on the go, but can look beautiful and stylish with a soft wave to give it some movement and sass.

Any advice for someone considering it?

With full haircuts like this, you always need to keep in mind the natural volume and movement you already have. This cut can work with most textures, but if you have strong and unruly hair, my advice would be to keep it a bit longer as it will bounce up and look a bit triangular, which isn’t very complimentary to most face shapes.

Work with the natural texture as much as possible and work with the movement you have by using a product like Kevin Murphy’s Hair.Resort spray. To achieve the waves in the picture, I used a large flat iron on a low temperature and loosely worked it through the hair. Always remember that when curling with the flat iron, you want to keep it pointing down toward the floor and gently hold it to avoid marks in the hair. Finish off with your salt spray and a little dust of shine spray and go about your day.

Graduated A-Line Bob for Women Over 50

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @hair__bysam

Q&A with style creator, Samantha Terlizzi
Hairstylist @ Be Inspired Hair Salon in Long Beach, NY

How would you describe this look?

This is an asymmetrical bob that is graduated or stacked in the back.

My favorite thing about this short haircut for women over 50 is that it can be worn straight with volume in the crown, or curled with a 1-inch iron to create a beach wave.

Any advice for someone considering it?

Hair should be medium to fine and manageable to wear this look. I advise getting a Keratin treatment if the hair is overly thick or coarse.

I recommend Goldwell Kerasilk Repower Volume Plumping Cream for fine, limp hair. Blow dry with a 1-inch round brush, rolling the hair under.

Depth With Pops of Color

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @the.hairstylist.v

Q&A with style creator, Vivian
Colorist / Hairstylist @ Michael Blunt Salon in Fresno, CA

How would you describe this look?

Our goal with this look was to create more depth with pops of color. We created a balayage look with some dimension, mainly creating more brightness around the face. The result was kind of like a halo, with soft tones pulling through the back of the hair and a higher contrast around the hairline.

Any advice for someone considering it?

To achieve this style, I suggest adding a smoothing lusterizer of some sort to damp hair. To help with frizz and unruliness, I used TIGI S Factor Smoothing Lusterizer. Once hair is completely dry, you can either spray in a light flexible hairspray all over, or a texture spray to create a lighter texture. Joico’s Hair Shake works well too.

Using a 1 1/2-inch curling iron, wrap the hair around the barrel, leaving about a half-inch of hair out at the tip. Do this all the way around without touching the curls until the end. Once finished, you can use a light oil like R+Co Tinsel to run your fingers through and spray a little more hairspray to set the look.

This style works for everyone because the curls look natural and you can really manipulate them to create the look you want.

Slightly Graduated Bob with Texture

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @drayas_styleroom

Q&A with style creator, Andrea Ramirez
Mentor Stylist / Master Color Expert @ Limon Salon in San Jose, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a slighty graduated bob with texture. I love it because it is a classic shape that can be styled different ways.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

For this client with coarse hair, I recommend Oribe’s Supershine straight away blow out balm. We finished with Oribe’s Dry Texture Spray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is ideal for the slightly lower maintenance client that likes lived-in hair.

California Beach Babe

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost Volume @timdbarneshair

Q&A with style creator, Tim Barnes
Hairstylist @ Jayrua Glam Hair Salon in Las Vegas, NV

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe the look as a California beach babe look. My favorite part is that it is a fun textured look and it’s easy to do! As the day continues, the hair gets more texture and more fun.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend Pravana Volumizing Foam and Moroccan Oil Texture Spray Wax to give it a beach effect. Use a 1-inch curler or wand to get the loose waves.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is perfect for fine to medium hair. In terms of skin tone, it can be worn across the board.

Because the length is just past shoulder, most face shapes should match. Just remember to not overlayer the hair or you will lose the shape of the haircut.

Best Face Shape and Hair Type:

Square, round or oval face shapes look amazing in this angled style, while hair that is naturally straight and fine to thin does well in recreating this look.

Shoulder-Length Middle Part

39 Flattering Hairstyles for Thinning Hair That’ll Boost VolumeHair Amanda Mitchell for Blaze Salon, Cedar Rapids, IA

  2. Blow dry hair using a concentrator on your dryer and a flat brush. Lift hair at scalp to add extra volume.
  3. Use a flat iron set at a low heat setting (this protects your fine tresses from the heat and your color from fading) to smooth out ends of hair.
  4. Use a texture powder to smooth any flyaways or ends.

Recommended Products:

A great thickening mousse is Pravana’s Full Volume. It uses cottonseed to plump each strand and give amazing shine, too!

  3. Using your favorite hairspray, mist your entire head and piece out and separate the layers.
  4. Finish off with your favorite shine spray.
