Top 10 Boybands from the 90’s

Right girls, it’s time to own up and admit – we all love a good boyband, don’t we? Those classic ballads with the oh-so-clever key change right in the middle of it, that lame hair and terribly choreographed moves. The whole cheese-factor is the whole reason we love them and with new up and coming boy groups such as One Direction taking over from where the likes of Another Level, A1, Hanson and 911 left the music industry, the cheese-factor is literally going through the roof!

It’s time to put your hair up in a terribly neon-colored hair scrunchie, find your brightest leg warmers, don your most day-glo tutu and take a step back in time to enjoy the delights the top 10 boybands from the 90’s brought to the table…

1 – Take That

Five boys Manchester in the UK got together and formed one of the most formidable boy groups ever to come out of the United Kingdom! Gary Barlow, Jason Orange, Robbie Williams, Mark Owen and Howard Donald were Take That and the whole world fell apart when just five years after they hit the headlines, Robbie Williams left the group.

They’ve had 28 top 40 singles in the UK, plus 12 number 1’s, 17 top 5 singles, seven number one albums… They were really adored, let’s leave it at that!

Sadly, they are now a threesome with just Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Own left but still releasing records and getting to the top of the charts! Plus, they’ve just gotten hotter with age, haven’t they?

2 – Backstreet Boys

One of the biggest boybands in the WORLD, Backstreet Boys or BSB were the lovable five lads from the Unites States that literally took the world by storm. A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell made up the Florida-created boy group, and their debut international album shot them to fame back in 1996.

Eight albums later, eleven tours, and a whole load of departures (and later returns) of the group members, they’ve since released a documentary movie, and gotten themselves a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and even had a day named after them in the US!

3 – Westlife

Irish crooners Westlife were an immediate hit with the ladies and they were the wholesome boy group that every girl dreamed of meeting before things took a very dramatic turn for the worst…

Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Shane Filan, Nicky Byrne, and Brian McFadden were the five boys that started off in the boy band. Brian jumped ship first in March 2004 despite them selling over 50 million records worldwide, and they bagged themselves a whopping 14 number one’s in the UK alone. It’s sad but true that they never actually broke the US market but if you’ve never heard of them, definitely have a listen – it is pure romantic cheese at its finest!

4 – NSYNC

Ah the boys in NSYNC were dreamy, weren’t they? Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, JC Chassez and Lance Bass were formed into the boy group back in 1995 in Orlando, Florida. Believe it or not, after some controversy with their former manager, their second album called No Strings Attached actually sold over a million copies just in one 24 hour period, and within it’s first week on sale, almost two and a half million copies flew off the shelves.

Back in Spring 2002, they took a break from the music industry to pursue other things and kinda never got back together… It was midway through 2006 that their website disappeared, and almost a year later, only one of the band members (Lance Bass) admitted that they had actually split up as a group and wouldn’t be working together anymore.

5 – Boyzone

Back to the UK and another Irish boy group – Boyzone were the original’s of Westlife, if that makes sense? This time we have ourselves another five-some and they came in the shape of Shane Lynch, Ronan Keating, Michael Graham, Keith Duffy and Stephen Gately.

With a string of hits under their belts, things were going really well for these crooners for a long time. They had a string of hits under their belts and the baby faces combined with Ronan’s deep Irish singing voice literally had the ladies swooning.

They split in 1999, had a brief spell back together in 2007, and sadly in 2005, the hearts of millions of girls and boys around the world were ripped out as it was announced that Stephen Gately had sadly died whilst on a holiday with his partner. It was definitely a very sad moment for boy bands.

6 – LFO

A three man group we come to with the American artists LFO. Devin Lima, Brian Gillis, Brad Fischetti and Rich Cronin have all been members of the band at some point or another although sadly, Rich Cronin passed away in 2010 after a nasty and long battle with Leukemia.

First Gillis left, then Lima arrived, then they split for a while between 2000 and 2002, there was a reunion and then another split, and then Rich Cronin died so really, they haven’t had a great time of things. Despite this they bagged themselves 5 million sales worldwide!

7 – 5ive

Back to England again and this time we bring to you the London based boy group with a badass edge and the attitude to match – 5ive. Consisting of Abz Love, Jason “J” Brown, Scott Robinson, Ritchie Neville, and Sean Conlon, there were recent attempts to get the group back together for the UK TV show The Big Reunion but J refused to take part. We also learned that Abz had a rather nasty battle with drugs and alcohol and pretty much lost everything. Oh and who could forget the famous relationship between fellow UK starlet Billie Piper and Ritchie?!

After selling over twenty million records all over the world, they split in 2001 and although three of them did try to get back together, it would seem that the original sparkle the boy group had has gone.

8 – 98 Degrees

These guys started in California back in 1996 and consisted of four singing guys – the brothers Nick and Drew Lachey plus friends Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre originating from Ohio.

Slightly differently to other boy groups, these four guys actually started their band as friends and were later picked up by a record label. Most groups are formed by a record label which is why so many people liked them – they were the underdogs, as such, of the music world.

with eight top 40 hits in the US, they have sold over ten million copies around the world, and after regrouping back in 2012 for a one-off gig, they have since released a brand new album and embarked on another tour!

9 – East 17

Walthamstow-based boys John Hendy, Terry Coldwell, and Tony Mortimer first started East 17 (named after their post code) but that’s not exactly the East 17 we knew and loved. Brian Harvey joined the group, they released the ultimate cheesy-ballad “Stay Another Day” and boom! They earned their place in music history.

They’ve sold over eighteen million records all over the world and seem to be making somewhat of a comeback with tours recently in 2014!

10 – O-Town

Back to the states again and who doesn’t remember the super sexy “Liquid Dreams” released by O-Town, four boys from the MTV show Making the Band? Erik-Michael Estrada, Trevor Penick, Jacob Underwood and Dan Miller. There have been a couple of other band members along the way – Ashley Parker Angel and Ikaika Kahoano, and after releasing a couple of albums and capturing the hearts of thousands of girls around the world, the group decided they were no more back in 2003. They did try to regroup as a four-some but sadly, Ashley Parker Angel decided it wasn’t such a great idea…
